Panorama Tower

11   /   06   /   2023

The 13-story office tower rising from the center of the San Fernando Valley floor used to be the pride of Panorama City. When the 1994 Northridge earthquake struck, it left Panorama City’s landmark tower empty and abandoned. For a while, it became a haven for homeless people – and a symbol of the neighborhood’s decline. Now, residents hope the tower will become a beacon of recovery. Developer Izek Shomof bought the Panorama Towers building last year for $12.5 million and plans a seismic retrofitting  to make 192 live-work units and retail space on the ground floor.

DESCRIPTION

In this project the structural engineer Mr. Charles Tan designed sixty five, 60 ft. deep caissons to improve the existing deep foundation system. He designed two concrete moment frames and two shear walls as new seismic load bearing system. In order to drill and construct 60 ft deep caissons, special methods had to be used. First obstacle was accessing the basement in order to transfer the required equipment. Second major obstacle was the head clearance for the drilling rig. In this project over 3,400 yards of shotcrete, more than 2,000 yards of concrete and 2.2M pounds of rebar were required.
